Sonnentor - Sun in your heart
Behind this promising name is not an avant-garde yoga group or a Far Eastern school of philosophy, but a company from Austria, more precisely from the Waldviertel region, which enjoys an excellent reputation on the market with tea and spices from sustainable organic production.
With his organic pioneering spirit, the farmer Johannes Gutmann has been able to grow over the last thirty years from a small regional family business to an internationally active company with now 500 employees, while continuing to spread good humour and healthy enjoyment throughout the world.
About the history of Sonnentor
Johannes Gutmann was already an ardent organic advocate when the word "bio" did not even exist. In the 1980s, society in general was not as concerned about food as it was about hairspray and shoulder pads. Gutmann, however, demonstrated a sense that the organic way is the best for health, the environment and the future.
His ideas were not received with open arms or enthusiasm: Regional organic products together under the roof of the laughing sun - an old Waldviertel symbol. This idea was still pitifully smiled at in 1988. So the then 23-year-old traveling salesman moved from farmers' market to farmers' market with his herbs. There, however, he became a "colourful dog" because, in addition to his first-class organic products, his iconic trademarks - decades-old leather trousers and red glasses - helped him to break through.
"We at SONNENTOR firmly believe that nature has the best recipes for a beautiful and long life. This is what we work for. It is what we live on. And we believe that organic farming is the only alternative to the consequences of monoculture and overproduction. The cycle, the recurring, the constantly renewing life is our basic principle".

Sonnentor - Tea and spices all natural
There is actually no need to artificially enhance the taste of nature, and so neither colourings nor artificial flavour additives or preservatives cloud the taste at Sonnentor. Through original soils, a sensitive approach to nature and experience gained over the years, Sonnentor products such as coffee or tea become natural and unadulterated food for everyday life and enjoyment.
The herbs & spices are harvested particularly carefully by the organic farmers at Sonnentor on certain days and are not dried above 40 degrees Celsius. They are then carefully packed by hand. The large leaves are a special feature of this time-consuming but rewarding work. You can feel and taste the extra work, because whole leaves contain a particularly high amount of essential oils. Cooks also break herbs just before use to bring out their special aroma.
We swim against the current - with sun, wood and green electricity
Sun gate - "About us"
Even in storage, tea and coffee at Sonnentor like to have a comfortable temperature. To prevent them from getting too cold in winter, however, a wood chip plant ensures the best climatic conditions in the storage and production halls. The wood chips used for this come from the waste wood of regional organic farmers in Austria. This combustion only produces as much CO2 as would be produced by the rotting of the wood in the forest. For the electricity demand Sonnentor - fitting to its name - uses the power of the sun. Our own photovoltaic system produces approx. 270 kWp of electricity per year - one third of the consumption. The remaining electricity requirement is covered exclusively by green electricity.
Coffee from Sonnentor - organic and sustainable
At Sonnentor, the farmers themselves are to benefit from the fruits of their labour and with them entire growing regions. After all, the sustainable working methods of the international cultivation partners increase the added value locally. Sonnentor products such as coffee or tea are harvested by hand and processed directly on site. This not only creates jobs in rural areas, but also secures the livelihood of many farming families over several generations. Because organic farming protects the soil and creates the best conditions for healthy, long-term and fertile harvests.
But why is Sonnentor not Fair Trade certified anyway? Because they don't want to rely on a logo when it comes to humane working conditions and valuable raw materials. Rather, they prefer to see for themselves on site and trade directly with the regional cultivation partners. This is the only way that Sonnentor is 100% sure that goods such as tea or coffee meet the high quality and organic standards and that farmers are really paid fairly.
The packaging at Sonnentor is not only meant for the eye, because especially with food, it fulfils additional important tasks by protecting the products and their valuable contents and helping to transport them undamaged. But due to the growing mountains of waste, packaging is also a major problem.
That is why the company started to switch to sustainable materials for packaging in 2008. In the meantime, almost 70% of these materials are renewable raw materials. These include films made of wood fibre and tea bags made of banana fibre, paper or cardboard. Anything that cannot be composted, such as glass and metal, can be recycled.
